1922 • The first race
Eight local sportsmen meet at the Fauquier Club in Warrenton to organize the first race across four miles of natural stone walls and rail fences at historic Oakwood, five miles west of Warrenton. These founders were Harry C. Groome, William S. Sowers, George B. Stone, E. AsdeyCooper, J. A.C. Mason, Richard Wallach, Sr., T. Lee Evans and E. W. Winmill. Irish Laddie, owned by vivacious young Katherine Elkins Hitt of Middleburg and daughter of a U.S. senator from West Virginia, won this first running of the Virginia Gold Cup race.
1924 • Move to Broadview
Gold Cup moves to a new course, Broadview Farm near Warrenton, and is run for the first time under national steeplechasing rules.
