racegoers that the Kentucky Derby - held the same afternoon, the first Saturday in May - was never run until the Virginia Gold Cup had been run. It was an impressive thought... the most famous horse race in America giving a bow to the greatest steeplechase in Virginia. It made it sound like someone in Louisville would monitor the progress of the Gold Cup and not allow die horses to leave the starting gate at Churchill Downs until the race in Warrenton was completed. It was all about a subject near and dear to the heart of Southerners and horse people: tradition.
