Brother Derek is the favorite, but his pedigree is suspect "His sire, Benchmark, has never been confused with a good stallion, but the California-bred colt has done nothing wrong. The problem with him is that he’s been winning against small fields when he’s been allowed to take an uncontested early lead.

His last start in the Santa Anita Derby was a case in point Only four others lined up against him; he won easily. On Derby Day, however, he probably will face 19 others, and if he gets the early lead, it will be after a tussle. He’s likely to have to run quicker than he really wants to, and that should tire him out by the time he reaches the stretch. Not a good value bet in my opinion.

Sweetnorthemsaint is another one with an odd pedigree, but his performance in the Illinois Derby was impressive. With two-time Derby winning jockey Kent Desormeaux -See FACT/page 16
