Turn 'em loose
Ben says the best thing about the project is “letting the fish go.” When the fish are older in April of 2007, Way will seek a permit from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to release the fish in a specific trout stream. When his class takes the field trip to release the fish, they will also conduct a stream bank cleanup to further enhance the new environment for the fish.
Way is very excited about his new class project. “The kids learn first hand the SOL emphasis on the effects of pollution and acid rain on the environment,” said Way, who wants to get started earlier next year so that his students can grow the trout from eggs. Thanks to Headwaters, all the equipment and consumable supplies are in place to support the continuation of the project. “The Headwaters mini-grant program is great,” said Superintendent Bob Chappell, “because it encourages teachers to go beyond simply teaching the SOL. The grants help our teachers creatively expand their programs to give our kids realworld experiences.”
