Lewis illustrated this with a personal example. When his daughter started school in 1993, technology was really expanding. With the introduction of the Internet, she and the World Wide Web grew up together. By the time of her high school graduation, the world, and her options, had changed greatly.
Kindergartners today will graduate in 2021, and Lewis said we must prepare them to succeed a dozen years from now. He came up with some of the “most pressing things we have to do.”
He suggested to be successful in 2021, we will have to speak a language other than our own. Along with language acquisition, we must be geographically literate, learning and understanding the world and its different cultures.
Lewis, like other forecasters, also emphasized the need for a global, competitive focus on math, science and engineering for both boys and girls, but he believes it must begin at the elementary school level.
