Rappahannock County Elementary School, and other activities conducted by the local Cancer Society unit raised some $85,000 in 2007, according to several of the women who resigned. Mahoney reported that the unit raised some $63,000 this past year.
By the calculations of Mahoney and others who resigned, Rappahannock generally raises eight to 10 doliars per capita across the county each year compared to one to two dollars per capita raised in neighboring Fauquier County. Executive Director Turner did not dispute that calculation, adding “the people in Rappahannock have been doing a terrific job."
Does that much value come back to the people of Rappahannock County, to its cancer victims? Turner said in an interview that “over a hundred percent of it comes back in terms of value to the community.”
She listed a number of activities and benefits that the cancer society in general provides to cancer victims. Told that Turner considers that more than a hundred percent of money raised comes back to the county, Latham thought for a moment and said: “I would say none” of it does.
