Mr. Dareing, like many progrowth advocates, makes the classic mistake of assuming that citizens of Rappahannock County live in a vacuum. News flash. We don’t. If we want jobs we can find them in our neighboring counties, none more than 20 minutes away, with most enjoying the so-called benefits of unbridled, unlimited, nearly unregulated growth.
Rappahannock County’s comprehensive plan wisely limits growth to businesses associated with agriculture and tourism. If it hadn't, this county would long ago have suffered the fate of its neighbors. The larger the population the greater the demand on a host of public services and the greater the increase in property taxes. Haven’t we learned anything by watching the surrounding communities?
