Harold Scoggin
Harold Scoggin passed away unexpectedly March 21, 2009, at the age of 84. He was bom in Spindale, N.C., in 1924 and was truly a member of America's greatest generation.
He joined the Navy at age 17 after Pearl Harbor was attacked and participated in six of th£ seven major naval invasions. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to North Carolina and worked in the construction industry before moving to Washington, D C.
In 1957, he married Merle Kemper from Plainview, Texas, and they settled in Alexandria, Va., living there for 11 years.
For many years, Harold had dreamed of farming and living in the country, and in 1964, they purchased a scenic property in Rappahannock County, Va. Before long, he, Merle and their son Bill moved to the farm, where he continued his career as a steamfitter and welder, raised cattle and enjoyed his life near the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Harold maintained an active lifestyle after retirement. In addition to farming, he and Merle traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada.
He was also very active in the Washington Baptist Church, a long-standing member of the Steamfitters Local 602 and attended several annual reunions of the naval ship he served on many years earlier.
Harold is survived by his wife, Merle Scoggin; his son. Bill Scoggin of Washington, Va.; and two brothers, Vance Scoggin of Plainview, Texas, and Roy Scoggin of Willis, Va.
His entire family feels blessed to have been a part of his life and will forever remember him as an honorable and pnncipled husband, father, brother and friend, who could always be counted on.
