In the views of those who have resigned, the items listed by Turner amount to scant return on the efforts extended by volunteers. Said Latham, “The work of the Council was unappreciated, its service (considered) unimportant.”
One sore spot for those who resigned is remembering that another cancer society official, Julie Overbaugh of the Winchester office, expressed “displeasure at our poor performance in raising funds.”
The women who have left the council still feel a great connection and a love for those who are working on the Relay and in the battle against cancer, and will continue to serve in some fashion in Rappahannock.
Their gripe is with regional, full-time paid officials of the society who work in Winchester and Roanoke. They said they don’t like the wav orders are given to volunteers.
Evelyn Latham is still on her Relay Team. She wants to help. She wants people in Rappahannock to get support and help, and will continue to volunteer her time toward that end.
Bette Mahoney said, “We really want to do something for the community, probably health related.”
