“This is good news that we're all here to talk about a visitor center," Overstreet told the group. “Wherever it is, it needs to be highly visible ... it should be handicapped accessible and should have ample parking, restrooms . .. and the mission is not just to have a place for brochures, but really this is a concierge service. It’s important that whoever the staff are, maybe volunteers, or a combination of volunteer and paid staff, whatever works - but these people need to have a hands-on familiarity with the county.”
County administrator John McCarthy, who wasn’t at the meeting, has said there is no money in the budget for visitor center construction or staffing, at least not for the next year or two. The supervisors asked the Tourism Partners group for a recommendation after it received two proposals by others to build and host a visitor center.
