attend the then segregated school house. He experienced the dedication on the school grounds as “a great day for his family.”
His sister, Caroline Patterson, recalled looking into her great-grandmother’s face that was without bitterness and filled with her “love for all.”
Judy Tole gave a brief history of Terry’s life and described the level of proof needed for a marker. John Tole reminded us that freedom from oppression, remembrance of all slaves, redemption with the removal of slavery and movement toward forgiveness were all symbolized by this Civil War Trails Marker.
All speakers expressed gratitude to those who contributed to the realization of the marker and to Cliff Miller for granting permission for its installation. Evergreen Shade (John Tole and Ann Howard) sang Civil War era songs. Rev. Anna Allsberry from the Hopewell Baptist Church gave the invocation . and the Benediction and noted “...somebody cared enough to create a memorial in her (Terry’s) name.”
