The economy may be recovering
but the jobless rate keeps going up.
As a result, more and more Rappahannock residents are signing up for the food pantry.
On Oct. 1, the numbers were 534 individuals and 192 households.
That’s 7.52 percent of a population of 7,100.
And the numbers continue to rise.
We are surely over eight percent now.
The response by the rest of us has been gratifying, bordering on overwhelming.
More than 300 volunteers have contributed time at the pantry, produce from their gardens, meat from their lockers, or items purchased at retail stores.
Financial donations have topped $10,000, including $1,000 from the Rappahannock National Bank for 200 Thanksgiving baskets, and proceeds from the Evening with Mark Twain.
Churches and Sunnyside and Waterpenny farms are major contributors.
