Penalize Weatherman 4 ( 'hiucse Nationalist weather man was recently accused by an agency of the Nationalist Government of "losing a ty phoon." The weatherman was charged with tailing to chart properly the course of the disastrous typhoon. Instead of going where the weatherman predicted, the typhoon struck Formosa on November 1 1th. without warning. The storm left over 150 dead an*l missing and injured about lot*. It also destroyed almost 10.000 homes and damaged an even larger number. In the Chinese- view, the weatherman, had he acted properly, could have accurate ly predicted the course of the typhoon. 11 is failure is being considered grounds for punitive action. We have sometimes wondered if this policy would not improve our own weather prediction system and regret that the sci ence of weather is not that simple. One of the marvels of our age is that the Cnited States continues to go its wav wit hunt any form of universal military training, while depending on a draft and its veterans to supply armed services man power. After thinking it over, we have eon eluded that Santa Claus has the easier time "f it, compared to the housewife who must buy thirty or forty presents and send hun dreds of cards, plus tending to a family and tiie annual Christmas cookery.
