CMUBIID AH]i By Ted Resting There is a good choice of bolt action shotguns on the market this year and they offer the op portunity of getting off on the right side of the cash register. Pete Brown, our arms expert, re ports : "I have made a survey of the bolt-actions on the market this year and have done some shoot ing with them. I am not a bolt action fan where shotguns are concerned, but I will say this. If a better shotgun was going to stand between me and the chance to get out in the field. I would get a bolt-action. Where ballistic performance is concerned, the bolt-action will shoot just as hard i an dfar as any other shotgun." When it comes to' functioning, the bolt-actions arc in a class by themselves. As repeaters, any of them are rather clumsy and not as fast as the other types of repeaters. In the first place, the bolts are of necessity long. la’"'e in diameter and heavy. The bolt handles are far forward—shotgun butt stocks (from butt to trigger* are about one inch longer than rifle stocks and the oolt handles are pretty well forward as it is. When loading a second shot, it is necessary — unless you are a long-arined guy — to do some leaching for the bolt handle. Therefore, you wont get that second well-directed shot off as quickly as you will with other types of repeaters. The bolt action shotguns are not w hat you would call smooth operating and. generally speaking, they arc not a beautiful gun. Still, they're excc.lent for the beginner. You get a lot of gun in one of these bolt-actions and they are guns you can use safely —you can also bag game and en joy shooting them. If I wasn't going to do a lot of shooting and wasn't sure that I would stay in the sport, I would be tempted by the bolt-actions. They are a good proposition for a young fellow starting out. He can find out whether he wants to stick with the sport and at the same time come to a better decision on what to get when he decides to buy a more expensive gun. If you have the opportunity1 of looking at various models i before making a selection, by all means do so. There is no substi tute for seeing and feeling. Chicago.
