Powerful and soul - stirring music was played on the four manual organ in Jarman Hall. Tuesday night, by Virgil Fox. re crrding artist and organist of Riverside Church. New York City. A near-capacity crowd of students and citizens agreed about the only thing Mr. Fox didn’t bring to Farmville was t.he reverent and meditative s litude of a great church for his concert. Gleaning a varied field of music from the pens of Handel, Bach. Corelli. Brahms, Bossi, Sowerby. Reger, and Beethoven. Mr. F x made two substitutions m his program. He played Bach's Prelude and Fugue in D Major and Mendelssohn's Sonata in F Min r for Organ in place of list ed selections. Mr. Fox. who is one of the out standing United States concert organists, played his recital as the fourth program in the 1952-52 Artists Series of Ltmgwood Col lege. He gave another ccncert in Farmville. Oct. 20. 1951. when the organ, given to the college by Long wood Alumnae Association, was dedicated Mr. Fox's ability, feeling, and dexterity are married only slight ly by his showmanship, which is not altogether a stumbling block, but ii. also, endears him to his audience. Time after time, Tues day night's audience was capti- ! vated by t ie range, quality, and combinations of tones and har monies that Mr Fox harvested from the $25,000 organ, one of the most complete organs in Vir ginia.
