In such a case, either a severe recession or depression, the Communist world would register signifi cant gains, comparatively, and a situation might result which could alter the world’s economic balance fundamentally. And while the Government has a respon sibility to do all it can to maintain a strong economy, so do leaders of the giant corpor ations and big businesses in this country. They are morally obligated to voluntarily utilize certain restraints, accept reasonable profits and create good working condi tions. Unions, too, are obligated to do their share in attempting to maintain a strong, free economy. In the final phase, the willingness of all Americans — including capital, labor and governmental leaders — to think of the best interest of their country may deter mine the long-term winner of the battle be tween Communism and Democracy.
