Virginia Experiment Stations have been making phosphate studies for the past 56 years, including a comparison of the different sources of phosphate. A brief summary of their conclusions based on the study are as follows :
1. Most soils in Virginia are deficient in phosphate..
2. The response to one crop in the rotation is not necessarily a guide to the phosphate needs. For example corn may not show much response but the phosphate applied to corn may be of great value to small grains, hay or other crops in rotation. *
3. If the soil Is very deficient in phosphate, the use of rock phosphate is not a satisfactory source of phosphate for immediate results.
4. Rock phosphate may be used, if immediate results are not expected. It may be used in heavy applications to build up the phosphate reserves in the soil, however, this may not be desirable for several reasons.
5. From a pratical standpoint, triple, superphosphate, calcium metophosphate and superphosphate have about the same value. The one to use would be the source you can get spread on the land at the lowest cost per pound of phosphoric acid.
6. The residual effect of phosphorus from a hea,Jy application of phosphate fertilizer has shown , up for more than 25 years after it was applied.
7. Only about 50 % of the phosphorus applied to the soil was recovered during the 38 year period. Due to this small recovery of phosphate we must always use several times the amount of phosphorus by the crops in order to prevent a deficiency of phosphorus. .
