They say today that a sufceessful farmer haa to be a “jack of all trades and master of them all.” If he is to survive, the farmer haa to be partly veterinarian, enough of a mechanic to keep his farm equipment in good running order, a fair carpenter, he must have a knowledge of contour cultivation and pest control, a liking for hard work plus natural farming ability. Besides these, he must be an accurate bookkeeper with a keen sense of money management.
The above qualities would give the fellow a fair start.
There are a few others that could come in handy. He will find use for patience that would make Job’s trials seem like a year’s vacation.
It has always been amusing to see and hear of the dreams of the city office-worker who dreams of the day he will own a farm and Sit back on the porch in the shade while the farm makes money for him hand over fist.
It brings to mind the story told by a doctor. “As a boy,” he said, “all I lived for was to grow up and get off the farm. As soon as I could after I was grown I bought a farm. Now here I am, still in the city, working like a dog to earn enough money to keep the farm going.” ,
There’s a parallel in the printing business. It seems to be a dream of every typewriter puncher on any city paper or magazine. He has always thought it would be fun to own a “little country weekly to play around with in my spare time.” An editor of one of those weeklies threatened to give his to the next well-dressed writer who made the statement, maintaining that that would be the .only way to teach him any different.
