vu selected for rotation grazing and subdivided into lour sub-lots of seven acres each. This gave four 7-acre lots and one 28-acre lot in each replicate. The boundaries to the lots were located so that shade and water conditions were more or less the same in all lots belonging to the same replicate.
2. Animals.
The horses were yearlings and two year olds of either draft or light breeding. In years in which light horses and draft horses were both used, it was required that each type be represented in multiples of four so that there would be at least one horse of each type and age for each grazing treatment in the experiment.
The cattle were good to choice grade yearling Hereford steers. They were obtained by purchase from local firms in the fall of the year preceding the grazing season in which they were to be used. Prior to the grazing test they were wintered . together on the same ration as one herd.
The sheep were obtained from the experimental flock. The ewes (were grade ewes and the lambs ewes sired by purebred Hampshire and Southdown rams. Ewes and lambs were used from the beginning of the pasture season in the spring until the lambs were sold in June and July. After the lambs were marketed, the ewes were rerandomized and used in the test throughout tHe breeding season and to the end of the grazing season.
8. Assignment of Animals to
Treatments.
The animals available for the experiment were classified into groups which were multiples of four iwith equal numbers from each group randomized to each of the four lots.
A Method of grazing.
After the animals had been assigned to lots, the lots which were to be grazed continuously were (docked with the three classes of livestock. These animals were kept 4n this pasture together for the entire grazing season.
