October 24 has been named as United Nations Flag Day and em« phasis is being placed on acquainting everyone with the blue and ■white flag. Home Demonstration clubs throughout the nation have made these flags and placed them on display. The United Nations flag made by the Rappahannock H.D. clubs was on display at the Rappahannock Fair. It is light blue in color and has appliqued upon the center a white world surrounded with a white olive branch.
Of course, the subject of a flag is rather a touchy one at Washington, Rappahannock’s county seat. Since Life magazine came out with the picture showing the speaking stand draped with the Stars and Stripes on thd occasion of the installation of the ladies into town offices, letters have poured in protesting this “desecration to Old Glory.” Naturally, the Mayor got all the blame, whereas, in truth, she was not mayor at the time the decorating committee unwittingly misused the Flag.
Please, let the rest of the county read this about the flag. To discuss any subjecteonneeted with a flag in Washington right now is sorta like bringing up the subject of rope and learning later that the hostess’s grandpappy was hanged for horse-thieving. In the town of Washington, one just neglects the subject of flags at present.
