Rep. Harrison Announces
Openings For Young Men
In Coast Guard Academy
Rep. Burr P. Harrison has called the attention of young men of this area to the nationwide competitive examinations for appointment to the United States Coast Guard Academy which will form the basis for selection of those entering the academy in 1951.

Mr. Harrison emphasized that a candidate, to be selected, must not only pass the examination, but also must stand high enough in the ratings to fall within the number of the entering, class. The total depends on the needs of the service next year.
“The Coast Guard Academy examination is strictly competitive and is controlled completely by the Coast Guard,” he said. “There is no such thing as a Congressional appointment to the academy. On the other hand, there is no limit to the number of candidates from any particular area.”
Mr. Harrison explained thyt candidates must be not less than 17 years of age and not more than 22 years of age on July 1, 1951. They' must have high school diplomas, or be scheduled to graduate next spring, and they must ibe in excellent physical condition. V The Coast Guard Academy is located at New London, Conn.
“Young men who are interested in a career as a Coast Guard officer should write for information and application forms to the Commandant, U. S. Coast Guard, Washington 25, D. C.,” Mr. Harrison said.
Luray C. of C. to Hold
Annual Dinner Nov. 16
The Board of Directors of the Luray Chamber of Commerce has set November 16 as the date for their annual dinner meeting of the organization. This meeting will be held in co-operation iwith the Luray Lions and Rotary clubs, who will attend in lieu of their weekly meetings, scheduled for that week.
