1951 ACP Aims To Build
Soil Reserves
Stockpiling fertility reserves in .the nation’s farm land will be the mine of the f95i ‘Xgricultdfal** Conservation Program rather than using soil reserves to produce already abundant supplies of cash crops, the Production and Marketing Adminisrtation said this week.
That, according to R. B. Bridgforth, State PMA head, summed up the thinking of a State technical committee which met in Richmond last week to consider conservation practices for next year’s ACP program.
The committee, which is composed of representatives of various State and Federal agricultural agencies, met to select the practices most needed in Virginia and to draw up specifications for each. Among the practices considered! were the use of liming materials, superphosphate and potash; seeding cover crops of legumes and grasses, or small grain; stripcropping, contour planting, terracing, and sod waterways; open and tile drainage; pasture development and forest stand improvement; and establishment of farm ponds.
When the final list of practices, their specifications and the amount of ACP assistance for each is determined, Bridgforth said that they will be published in a State handbook. From that handbook, each county will select practices
