Walrus and marched proudly off to school. He came home 'broken-spirited and definitely hurt. The teacher had belittled his- appeararffce" and informed him that it was a rule of the New York City schools that he wear a dress-tjp shirt and a necktie when he attended classes.
Maybe the tax-paying merchants in that city put in that ruling to help their business. But I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the little countryraised boy who had to endure a necktie in order to have the greater advantages of the city school. I've often wondered if he wouldn’t be satisfied with lesser learning and have his barefoot days back again, and be able to climb a tree instead of just looking at them in the park.
