A STATEMENT BY REPRESENTATIVE HARRISON
Representative Burr P. Harrison charged in an address in Winchester July 6 that Francis Pickens M«*er is being supported by a New York organization, many of whose backers are mentioned in the records of the House Un-American- Activties Committee.
He named the organization as the National Committee for an Effective Congress, of 11 East 48th St., New York City, and he said it was “soliciting contributions to defeat Senator Byrd and elect Francis Pickens Miller."
The Congressman called upon Miller for an explanation “as to why persons mentioned in the record?» files, and publications of the House Un-Amferican Activities Committee are soliciting contributions to elect him and defeat Senator Byrd.” ' ; ? 1
Harrison said the chairman of that committee had said it listed “many of the persons listed on the letter- .4/ head of this New York organization.”
“I do not charge that any of these men listed on V the letter dated June 30, 1952, are Communists,” Harri- v » son said.
His statement continued:
“The letter says that the committee has been active in campaigns in other States alid that ‘such an investment (of money) made in tinie will yield .more dollar-for-dollar value in positive results than any equal expenditure we know of.’
“May I ask this question: Results for"whom? Certainly not the taxpayers of America^
“This New York fund-raising committee seeks to defeat Senator Byrd and elect Mr. Miller because Senator Byrd ‘wields an implaccable ax on government expenditure.’
“This is additional evidence of Hie bitter enemies Senator Byrd has made in fighting waste in Washington and in fighting those policies which would take America down the road to socialism. T
“Make no mistake about it, fellow-Virginians, powerful and ruthless elements are seeking the defeat | of the acknowledged watchdog of the Federal Treas- 3
