-That the • Senate passed a hill to increase the base pay from $21 to $42 per month and that Senator Byrd voted for this bill. The House of Representatives passed a bill increasing the- pay from $21 to $50 a month. The Senate version of $42 and the House version of $50 went to a conference committee. The Committee split the difference and reported back a bill making the base pay $46. Senator Byrd voted for this bill. The House refused to adopt the~ 'conference report and a second committee of conference was held. This second conference committee changed the pay to $50. The bill then went back to the House, which approved it,-and then to the Senate, which likewise approved it and Senator Byrd voted in favor of it. .; 'This is the record. _ Yet, Mr. Miller continues to repeat what he must know is a completely inaccurate statement. This_ is not only unfair to Senator Byrd, which is bad enough, but more importantly it is completely unfair to t^e voters. Obviously, Mr. Miller is attempting to mislead them in regard to Senator Byrd's record.
Incidentally, Senator Byrd was a patron and sponsor of the GI Bill of Rights, a fact which, Mr. Miller does not mention, but one that he can
