It’s The Appearance
At Amissville’s Firemen’s Festival parade Saturday evenning,. the absence of the Rappahannock Fire Company was. conspicuous until several visiting firemen from out of the county commented upon it. . _Sperryville Fi re Co mpany w a s there, with the truck, both nights, and made, their presence .known as a sigh of encouragement to the sturdy men of Amissville who are organizing their own company ancf letting the rest of the country know that they are doing their best to protect themselves and their neighbors when fire strikes.
The people of the town of Washington were present. It was just that no one took the trouble to carry the fire truck to have it appear in the parade as a public sign that the Rappahannock Fire Department, also, wished well to the new fire company in the county.
It was the appearance of the thing that caused criticism.
As stated, people from the county seat were there to show their well wishes and donate to the new fire company. In the crowd either Friday night or Saturday night, or both, were seen enough Washington people to almost call- the roll, street by street. But, still the Fire Company, as such, was not represented, and it gave firemen from visiting counties the opportunity to notice the absence. They did not know that Washington citizens were there; they don’t know them; but they did know that there was no fire truck present with Rappahannock’s name on it.
This kind of oversight can cause trouble in the future. Members of the fire company must realize that failure to show appreciation to their neighbors can give a black-eye to the company. It can give them a reputation of non-co-operation. It falls back into that old admonition to
