recently about the edueetion system written by Colgate Darden. Since 1 agreed with the gentleman 100%, I am now of the opinion that he is a brilliant man.
That’s the general attitude, I’m told; we appreciate those who agree (with us. How-some-ever, it isn’t conducive to learning. If I don’t listen to ideas other than those of my own, how will 1 earns? . . . Ah, well! It’s beautiful au- c tumn weather. The world’s a good place to live. I’m comfortable. Why should I care about learning?
A tale comes back to me about the fellow who became concerned over the education of his children. His conscience began to > hurt because he hadn’t let the kids go to school. So he announced that he had ’‘hitched up the surrey and driV’ the children to Fredericksburg” because he didn’t want ’em to grow up in ignorance.
My folks never drove me to Fredericksburg — but they drove me to school plenty of mornings, and they drove me to homework at night, and they drove me behind the woodshed (when my school work wasn’t up to their satisfaction. I guess I can't blame my sho’rt-comings on them; they did the best they could to keep me ‘‘from growing up in ignorance,”
