Jhe ly49 census shows Joyb head of dairy cattle in Rappahannock Co. Mr. Houston states 500-600 head of cows are the minimum number for a good part time association while 1100-1200 head are needed for a full time association. Most Artificial Breeding Associations are set up as follows: All time membership fee of $7. Of this amount $2 goes to the Virginia Artificial Breeding Association towards maintainence and purchase of necessary equipment at the Bull Center. The remaining five dollars remains in the local association for the purchase of an insemination kit and carrying case, microscope, glove and sleeve, dozen glass syring«, 500 plastic tubes and charter. This equipment and charter will cost apporximately $220 or that part of 44 membership fees which remain in the local treasury.
At present there are ten farmers who want to join and others have indicated keen interest. Should a Rappahannock Association be formed local dairymen who are at present members of the Culpeper Association may be released if they so desire. Also same would apply to a few dairymen around Etlan, in Madison County. This would make around 100 more cows available to the Rappahannock Association, which, if agreeable to make the change would amount to about 20% of the required number for a part time association.
