After that first calf was dropped, Tootsie produced another annually for fourteen consecutive years. In* fact Tootsie now has sixteen daughters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters and great-great-granddaughters on the Updike farm! Besides rearing a bountiful family of her own Tootsie practically raised the entire Updike family, four of the five children, all boys, were nourished from her milk as infants and on through boyhood. The calf, shown above with Tootsie, is her fifteenth. This calf is Glenn Updike’s 4-H project. When Glenn learned an attempt was to be made in getting a picture of Tootsie he went to the lower farm to get his calf where she had been kept since being weaned. As Glenn came through the gate into the pasture with his heifer she lowed upon seeing her dam. Tootsie, who had been listlessly lying in the same spot for several days, pricked her ears, turned and looked at her baby. Glenn dropped the lead strap to his heifer’s halter. She walked up to Tootsie and dropped her head over her mother’s shoulders in a caressing manner. Shortly thereafter, Tootsie got to her feet, walked feebly to the creek for a drink of cool water, which proved "to be her last.
Miss Annie Stephenson and Harry Stephenson were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Zula Sealock at the Lee Highway Hotel.
