A mild lecture came my way t'other day—by conversation—-on the theme that we Virginians, and . southerners in general, cannot appreciate Thanksgiving in the same spirit with which New Englanders take the annual harvest festival.
I took the lecture with attentive ear, for to some extent I agree with the lecturer, and to some, I didn't. On the latter phase I remained silent.
Whenever one sees Thanksgiving symbols, quoth the lecturer, they are four: the Bible, the turkey, an axe, and a gun. The usual picture may be decorated with a Pilgrim’s hat, an Indian feather, or a pumpkin, but always there are the four.
These symbols were well-known to the Pilgrim fathers. The Bible led them to this strange and lonely land, as the Word of God, and need for freedom to worship Him
