Tootsie was the family cow of the J. B. Updike family.• Tootsie was half Guernsey and half Milking Shorthorn, a heifer first born, and therefore considered not worth much by the owner of the dam. Mr. Upk dike bought her for a dollar, put her in a cotton feed bag and took her home. He had his eye set on a young maiden (namd) and figured, “if I get her, we’ll be needing a cow” . . little Tootsie was to be it. “Edly” as he is called, got his gal as well as his family cow.
Their first son, Kelly, was born July 6, 1936- Both Kelly and Tootsie got pains in their tummy on July 23, 1936. Time proved that Kelly had -the—colick and that the time had come for Tootsie’s first calf to be born. Mr. Updike had been walking the floor all night with Kelly when he finally gave up and, like most men, lost no tme in getting out of the house away from that bawlin’ brat. It was then, he discovered that Tootsie had a nice calf. Somewhat elated he returned to his home to tell Mrs. Updike the news and found Kelly still bawling at the top of his lungs. Having tried everything he could think of to offer Kelly as a passifyer during the night without success, he offered Tootsie’s new calf. Kelly quieted.
