Always with the American went the gun. As the silent wilderness had concealed the threat of savage and serpent, so the uncovering of its wealth bred new dangers and the need for defense against them: the tyrant in a hundred guises who sought to make the rewards of other men’s labor his own. So, the right to keep and bear arms became fundamental to the American. The steel of his tools and of his weapons alike have always reflected the bright metal of his own spirit___
These are the symbols of the day we celebrate; of American freedom; of its inspiration and its attainment; of its rich reward and its price.
These are our hallmarks, the tokens of our creed and destiny, the things we stand for: faith in God; zeal and achievement; the pot of gold at the rainbow’s end; abiding love of country — the Bible, the axe, the turkey, and the gun.
It may be quite true that we Virginians have not inherited the true spirit of the Pilgrim fathers in their first Thanksgiving harvest festival. On that topic I will not take issue with the lecturer; but I would feel -that where Virginia produced the man who worded the Declaration o f Independence, would it not be fair to. say that we Virginians accept a national Thanksgiving as a part of our heritage as much as the New Englanders accept the July 4th document?

There are so many things to be thankful for that we shall leave the ministers to cite all the large ones at Thanksgiving services in the churches.
