There have been some questions asked your county agent which he couldn’t answer regarding the sale bf cows at auction markets as affected by the new regulation issued by the state veterinarian and were passed on to Dr. Bendix. The following letter and reply are offered: “Your new regulation governing sal£ of breeding cattle at auction markets has created much confusion among Raopahannock farmers. Even though I have a copy of this regulation there are a number of questions I can not answer and therefore would appreciate, your clarification. They arc as follows:
1. If all untested cows and heifers are to be sold by the pound can a ^ farmer buy and take back to his farm for breeding purposes if he desires to take such a risk?
2. It is felt cows sold by the head in this area bring approximately $25 more per head when sold through markets than they do when sold by the pound. What is your estimated loss per cow in Virginia as result of Brucellosis? In other words which loss is the greater or smaller, etc?
3. If several cows go to market in the same truck and are penned together during blood testing processes are the clean reactors considered safe to take home even though one or more in the same load may have been a reactor?
4. If the plate test is to be used will such test be recognizzed for intestate shipment of non reactors from this test put into accredited herds?
5. What effect will the regulation have on the overall beef price structure?
Dr. Bendix’s reply is as follows:
