Our new President takes over his duties Tuesday. The prayers of the nation go with him—and he’ll need them!

Our city1 papers will probably begin raking up a lot of dirt, scandal, and all kinds of stories on how bad the former administration was. Some of us won’t get too upset. We can recall that the country was not in the best possible shape in 1933 when the Democrats took over. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and. say they tried to help the country. This new crowd going into'power in Washington can say, also, that the country is not in the best possible shape. If they try to help it, that’s all that can be expected.

As of right now, the wife of the President of the United States is “Mrs. Eisenhower” in these quarters. I’m sick of “Mamie” and “Bess” and all the other use of familiar first names of people in public life. I’m betting you never hear an Englishman refer to his Queen as “Lizzie” or any other nickname. Since when did Americans get to the point that they can’t treat the wife of the Chief Executive with as much respect?

With a woman it might be one of. eight reasons: (1) because her husband says she can’t have it, (2) because it will make her look thin, (3) because it comes from Paris, (4) because the neighbors can’t afford it, (5) because nobody has one, (6) because everybody has one, (7) because it is different, and (8) “because” . . .
