This trouhle seemingly steems from two primary causes: first because castration is delayed until calves are too old and secondly a lack of understanding of how to do the job.
While 1953 will be the first year the Winchester sale has required dehorning the Orange sale did so last year. In talking with county agents from counties consigning to this sale as well as farmer members of the weeding committees I learned several of their consignors who had attempted the dehorning operation had calves rejected because of scurs. These mal formed horns are frequently harder to remove than those formed naturally and besides who wants to experience having a nice calf rejected by the weeding committee because it has a scur. -
Since many farmers do these jobs themselves and because of the above, our county Livestock Committee requested that dehoming and castrating demonstrations be held early this spring. These demonstrations will be held the afternoon of March 31 and
