NEW CONTROLS BILL AIMS AT PREVENTION
Our Senate Banking and Currency Committee completed its work last week on a "quick freeze” economic control bill intended to prevent scare buying and war profiteering in a future grave national emergency such as the beginning of another world war. •
When such ‘grave emergencies have occurred in the past, prices have gone up before the Congress could pass stabilizing laws. This has required wage adjustments and then more price increases in fairness to those who did not try to take advantage of the situation. The result has been inflationary movements which broke through any ceilings that were established.
Our bill provides that if there is a grave emergency affecting the national economy AND security, the President can freeze all wages, prices and services. This freeze would last for only ninety days and the President could do it only once under this law. But that Would allow time for the Congress to pass a detailed condo
