Public Assistance Decreases
In State; County Increases
Total expenditures for public assistance in Virginia decreased for the first time in several months in May, the Department of Public Welfare announced today.
In Rappahannock County, according to Mrs. M. Elizabeth Buntin, SuperintenderV of the welfare department, public assistance expenditures increased.
Public assistance payments totaled $2837.44 in the county for May, in the state, $1,304,599 was paid out to recipients of assistance ,in six categories. This was a statewide decrease of $5,272 from the previpus" month. The decrease in expenditures was realized despite a slight increase in the Statewide caseload. In May, the total was 35,181, while April’s total was 35,176: Figures for Rappahannock County show a May total of 124 and 125 for April. Throughout the §tate, there were 1,022 less cases receiving assistance in May of this year than in May a year ago. Although the number of cases that received financial assistance decreased in dll but two programs, the total number increased because of increases in Aid to the Disabled cases and Foster-Care cases. ’ Average payments throughout the State in the sht categories were: Old Age Assistance $26.59j Aid to the Blind $34.10; Aid to Dependent Children $63.53; Aid to the Permanently and Totally Disabled $35.95; Foster Care $35.06; and General Relief $33.81.
