MELVIN WILLIAMS
If you were to visit the farm of Miss Mary Bruce at Forest Grove you wTould be sure to notice some very definite improvements made this summer —mainly the new white board fence and the addition to the barn to accommodate their 12 dairy cows. Melvin Williams had a good bit to do with these improvements.
Melvin is our 4-H dairyman in Rappahannock County. He has been a 4-H club member for eight years and has been increasing his projects each year. Last year Melvin was awarded the coveted achievement award for his 4-H work so far.
His net profit on his 15 different projects stands at $670.55. Melvin owns six dairy cows that are in production at the present time. He is installing a milk cooler and a concrete floor for grade B milk. Even though the conversion costs some money, Melvin says “with the extra 60c per 100 pounds of milk, I figure the cooler and concrete will pay for itself before to long.”
Year before last Melvin tried his hand at the Farm and »Home Electrication project. He finished as the boy doing the best job in the county and was awarded a 3day all-expense-paid trip to Richmond to attend the Electric Congress.
After dairying, Melvin’s next interest is with beef cattle. He has. a very good start with an Angus cow and heifer that he originally bought from J. Rodes Brown through the Rappahannock Angus Breeders Association. He is continuing his corn project again this year and has three acres of pretty decent corn to feed his livestock.
Melvin has held offices in his school club and now we are depending on him as a leader for the Forest Grove 4-H Club. We shall be proud to present Melvin with a year pin this fall for his 8 years of good club work.
