September 1, 1950 when the ladies went into office the Town of Washington had a bank balance of $3000.00 on savings and $1333.89 on checking account. As of September 1, 1954 there was $3000.00 on" savings and $1711.67 on checking account. No taxes were levied during this period.
The following accomplishments were made at the expense of the town, or made by the influence or request of the council:
1. Additional street lights installed.
2. New traffic signs put up in town. .3. Franchise secured from the Power Company whereby the town receives $75 from the Northern Virginia Power Company annually.
4. Town hall painted in and out, roof repaired and painted.
5. Picture postal cards put on sale in town.
6. New no parking signs pur. chased and put up in town.
7. Two signs “Keep Virginia Green and Washington Clean* \secured for the town from the Forest Service.
8. Trash barrels secured and placed in town where needed.
9. Increased insurance on town hall.
10. Filed petition before judge to secure town water rent free for fire hydrants, fountains and town hall. ' ^
11. Painted fire hydrants.
12. Through cooperation of 4-H & Va. Forest Service planted 125 dogwood trees in town. 13. Had State Highway to put in grate at the rulvert on Main and Porter streets.*
14. Erected welcome signs on entrance of town.
15. Secured playground and equipment for the town.

Rappahannock County teacher salaries stand around midway, when compared with those of other rural counties in this section according to a recent report from the Virginia Education Association. > JFhe Rappahannock salary range is from $2,250 a year minimum to* $3,200 a year maximum. This stand against a minimum of $2000 for 1953 and a maximum of $3000. Among nearby counties, the equivalent figures are Culpeper $2200-$3200; Page $2100$3400; Fauquier, $2400-$3400 & Warren $2400-$3500.
“In an analysis we arrive at the following conclusions: 1. Top salaries for experienced teachers vary from $2800 in 13 counties to $5100 in Fairfax, $5000 in Arlington; $3800 in Norfolk, $3700 in Chesterfield and Henrico. 2. The median top salary for 195455 is $3100 as compared with $2900 in 1953-54. 3. Seven cities and counties pay beginning salaries of as much or more than ties. 4.
