Parents' meetings will be held next week at Rappahannock County High School todiscuss the polio vaccine program which may get under way here next month, jt was announced today by Dr. Allman, county Health Officer and Mr. Gasque, School Superintendent. , “Familiar now with the general plan of the vaccine program, parents of children in the first and second grades of school naturally are eager for fuller details about it,” Mr. Gasque /said. “Forms requesting vaccination for their children have been distributed to them and may be signed and returned to their teacher. “Health and school authorities, working together, have planned these informal meetings to answer questions,” Dr. Allman explained. “Factual information for -the general public is being disseminated as well. If the Salk polio vaccine is licensed, we will then be ready to begin inoculations immediately, knowing we have full community understanding and support of the program.”
If scientific evaluation proves the vaccine effective and it ts licensed, k will be offered Jo dub-, dren in the first and second grades of the county’s public, private and parochial schools. "Supplies of vaccine for this purpose will be made ; available to the State Health Department without charge for the product by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Vaccine will be available for purchw at the same time, to be used by physicians for other children.
Parental request forms, tentative location of clinics, methods of setting them up and staffing them, and the importance of each child s receiving three “shots” over a five week period, will bje reviewed at the meeting. How parents can help in the general administration of the vaccine program also will be discussed. tl
Each meeting will allow full opportunity for questions. Parents of children of all ages are welcome to attend. ■- . ' ■
