Letter To The Editor:
I want the people of Virginia to , know my reasons for opposing as strongly as I did recently the proposed tax cuts then pending in the Senate. j
The vote yesterday was on a proposal to give to only a part of the taxpayers-a credit of $20. This is about 6 cents a day, yet the aggregate would have meant a loss of $600 million to the Treasury, every dollar of which would have to be borrowed and added to the public debt.
Last'year, it will be recalled, I opposed the Eisenhower tax reduction program and voted against the final passage of the 1954 tax bill.
I think that to reduce taxes and borrow the money to do so is the height of fiscal folly. If continued, it is the certain road to ruin.
Nobody desires tax reduction more than I, knowing full well the terrible burden of our present taxation system. The only way to redOce tax'es is to reduce spending so that' the budget will be balanced. * and we will have a surplus to justify tax reductions.
