Controlling Parasites In Livestock
Cattle. Your County Agent continues to see cattle eaten up with lice. Cattle that have been fed good all winter simply to nourish a pest that is ersy to control. It is obvious that a thini cow can’t do a good job of' suckling her calf. One owner had told me he had been advised by a custom sprayer' not to spray his cows until Warm weather. Evidently the man who was to do the job was more concerned over getting his hands cold than he was over ridding die cattle Jice as those same cattle had been out in every snow or cold rain that fell this winter. To be Sure it isn’t necessary to spray on a cloudy windy day—but to spray cattle on a sunny quiet day, and there have been plenty such days this winter, is not as much , shock as a cold rain which keeps the animals coat of hair wet for seveijal hours.
Materials: \Vz rounds of 25% Lindane per 100 rollons of water; or 7 pounds of 6% gimma isomer B.H.C.; or 21 pounds of 50% wettable DDT. Allow one-half gallon spray per cow.
Caution: Do not spray calves under two months of age with Lindane or B.H.C. 1 Don’t I use DDT on cows beingj milked nor B.H.C. on cows being milked or on animals to be slaughtered within 30 days.
If you think cattle will shed lice as they shed their winter coats you are dead wrong. Lice suck an animals blood just as efficiently in summer as they do in winter. Spray
