$700 Stolen From

Rappahannock County Circuit Court Clerk’s office at Washington, Va. was broken into early Sunday and an estimated $718 in cash taken from the cash box.

Thieves entered the record room of the office through a window winch contained an airqpnditioner, and was 'not protected by iron bars. They ransacked the room, broke open siterf filing-cabinets and went * through all drawers ’ and desks, scattering papers all over. No valuable papers were taken, however.

The theft was discovered Sunday morning after Carol Ann Petty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Petty found a metal box from the office in the field near her home. Mr. Petty called deputy Guy Burke who notified Sheriff Critzer and J. M. Settle the County Clerk. <•:.*«,j' ; ■ , ‘ Authorities say they found tracks on the ground near the window indicating that more than one person was involved in the theft which they ascertained occurred after midnight Saturday because ink on papers found oustide had not run. It had rained here before midnight. An unusually large amount of cash was in the clerk’s office, representing receipts from hunting licenses sold Saturday. A reward is being offered for any information leading to the solution to the crime.
