The 1961 “Boy 4-H’er of the Year” from Rappahannock is Lyle Updike, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Updike of Washington, Va.
Lyle has been an outstanding 4-H Club member since he entered into 4-H activities in 1955. He has completed 17 projects. To date Lyle has received a total $940.77 as net profit from his projects, in the five years as a club member. These projects included livestock and crops.
Lyle has carried a "sheep project each year. He has shown lambs at the Winchester Spring Lamb Show and Sale; the Culpeper Farm Show and the Warren County Fair. Market hogs have also been his project for two years. Last fall at •the Warren-Page-Rappahannock Hog Show and Sale in Front Royal he showed the grand champion single. He also won the showmanship contest at this show. He showed and won ribbons at the Orange Area Market Hog Show and Sale last fall.
Lyle has been an active member of the 4-H Livestock Judging team for two years. IHe has competed in the district and state contest for two years. Last year he placed first at the state contest winning the chance to compete on the state team in the national contest in Chicago. At the national contest, he placed second individual, with the Virginia team placing first.
Lyle is President of the Flint Hill Senior 4-H Club and is a member of the 4-H County Council.
Everyonfe will agree that with this record, Lyle is truly a 4-H’er of the year. .
