The landscape as a proper and independent subject for a canvas was not generally accepted until almost two centuries after Denis van Alsloot painted "The Flight into Egypt.” Yet during those two centuries many painters used the landscape as their major subject, making the incident from which their titles were derived a secondary subject minor to the landscape itself.
Some artists went So far as to work in collaboration with other painters, one completing the landscape while the other added the figures which were necessary for th portrayal of the incident. It is known that van Alsloot, who died in 1628, did this, for certain of his paintings have figures by Hflndrick de Clerck.
Both van Alsloot and Clerck " were Flemish painters who worked in Brussels. Denis van Alsloot was
