The last months of 1864 an early part of 1865 were trying times for die officers and crews of Confederate ships in Europe. Time was running out. The handwriting had appeared on the wall. The Confederacy would be defeated. Every day increased the burdens of those in command. t
News from home_when it could get through_was all bad. Defeat of the armies_desertion of soldiers, weary of the struggle, and longing to go home. Trouble with the slaves (many were believed to have been taken by Yankee slave dalers to Cuba and sold in the slave market there. Cuba did not abolish slavery until 1886—twentyone years after it was abolished in die United States and it is known that many slaves from the South were sold there by Northern slave dealers.)
The Secretary of die Confederate Navy, Stephen R. Mallory, relied heavily on Commander James on the Confederate Navy show D. Bullock and the official records that he was a most capable and dedicated officer.
