Skyline Ski Club, Washington, seeking a favorable location, selected a mountainside in Rappahannock to construct a skiing area. In the last few years the number of ski enthusiasts in the Metropolitan area has rap dly increased and a proximate location was needed to eliminate lengthy traveling for access to a ski slope.
Last summer, directors of the Washington Ski Club appointed Mr. Frank Loickes, Jr. of Arlington, Va., formerly the manager of the Davis, W. Va. ski site, to find a suitable n rarby location for a development. After an extensive search, and through contact with Dr. Roswell Bowersett, who is promoting a real estate development near Flint Hill, the “Jahnproperty”
in Harris Hollow, son owned by W. A). Miller, was selected.
Climatologk studies proved the temperatures satisfactory for making artificial snow. By using compressed air and ! water conducted through a spray nozzle for atomization, minute ice crystals are formed in temperatures of 30 degrees or below. Work on the project began July 11 of this year.
Plans call forj an intermediate slope 1,800 feet in length with a vertical drop of |470 feet. In addition to this will be a 3-acre instruction area, and a novice slope 400 feet long. A|2-|cre lake with a 30 foot dam will provide water for the artificial snow machine, There will be a Ski tow, a warming hut where coffee and short orders will be available This will be a year-round recreation area with swimming in the sandy beached
