CAIRO . I’ve been sitting here for five minutes wondering how I can tell you of Cairo yet I know no matter how long I sit I won’t find the right words. Perhaps I would have felt the same about any city so completely unlike ours_but Cairo is my first and all I can tell you is that I’ve fallen in love with it. After breakfast and a few phone calls I decided I wanted to walk and explore by myself_to get my own impressions. I ended up two blocks from here at the British Museum with its miles and miles of antiquities— with two Egyptian students showing me around. It was very nice to have two very modem Egyptians explaining their very ancient ancestors. Later I delivered myself into the hands of a drago-man, or rather, 1 suddenly found I had said yes when I thought I had said no. How these men can talk! Your every no seems to come out yes until you can’t believe it is yourself you can hear talking. But I won’t downgrade my guide, for he was very good and I> enjoyed myself.

We went first to the Mosque of Ali Hassen, one of the oldest still in good order. The size is
