quarter* for the Suez Co. We went to two of the many dubs there, on die Bitter -Lakes, with wonderful swimming and sailing and cool breezes. We went sailing just before it was time to leave and it was really lovely. And this morning 1 squeezed in a trip to Old Cairo, where the oldest Christian Church of the area stands, said to be the place where the Holy Family stayed while hiding ini Egypt. There was a wonderful little boy there who acted as my guide and told the story so well. Here also is the oldest synogogue in Egypt, where Moses came to pray that his people should be delivered from the pharoahs. Also saw the palace of Farouk and found what I expected: heavy over stuffed furniture, overcrowded rooms, moldy pictures of Kings and famous people all over the place. Most of the design was Islamic, of course, but it confirmed my opinion that most 18th Century stuff was quite monstrous. My last night in Cairo some friends took me to their favorite place in all Cairo and now voted mine too. We started with tea atGroppis again; from there to one of the bazaar areas for dinner outside a tiny shop which seems to place you right in the middle of all Cairo. The food_a pastry pie sort of affair.was marvelous and much more interesting to watch made than even the fabulous pizza pie makers in Times Square. It was fascinating watching the hundreds and hundreds - of people go by. From there to a truly unbelievable cafe....situated in an alley, with fhe walls of the adjoining buildings to serve as its walls. This cafe is 300 years old and has not been changed at all since the beginning. More than anyplace else you got the feeling of age._...old patched hangings, copper pots, cats everywhere.time seems unimportant. From there a walk along the Nile, which for me was goodbye to Egypt, for I had to be off for Beirut early next morning. But this is one place I’ll be seeing again. A week is so little time and Egypt has so much to offer.
