BROILERS
There is basic strength in broiler j
prices, although there may be tern- J porary set-backs in the next week or so, as consumers react to retail prices nearly double what they were two months ago.
With Richmond retail prices at 39 to 45 cents a pound last week, ready-to-cook movement was sluggish. DelMarVa farm prices eased off a little and Georgia and North Carolina farm prices failed to continue their gains.
But with national broiler supplies holding about the same through January and into February, farm prices should recover quickly from any drops, and move on to a little above present levels. January farm prices in Virginia last year ran 17 to 18 cents.
Rapid recovery «f broiler prices in the past several weeks was a clear case of supply .and demand. There was some lag because it is always hard to get prices up out of the well, but basically, prices moved back up as national supplies were cut down to the sire of demand.
